Responding to the announced review of the Carr-Hill formula for GP funding distribution, Rachel Power, Chief Executive of the Patients Association, said:

“Patients from deprived and coastal communities have been left behind by an outdated and unfair GP funding distribution system; this review of the Carr-Hill formula is a long-overdue chance to put that right.

“Patients living these areas consistently tell us they struggle to access GP appointments despite experiencing the deepest health inequalities. An update of the formula has been a key ask of our work with patients on health equity, so we’re pleased to welcome today’s announcement.

“This review is overdue but essential to ending the postcode lottery of care. We look forward to contributing to it, to ensure it delivers real improvements in access for patients who need it most.”
