Responding to a new survey from NHS Providers, Chief Executive of the Patients Association, Rachel Power, said:

"We are deeply alarmed by reports that NHS trusts across England are being forced to cut staff, close services, and ration care to meet severe savings targets.

"The disturbing survey by NHS Providers reveals the scale of this crisis: 47% of trusts are already cutting services, 37% are reducing clinical posts, and 26% have said they will need to close some services, with many more considering similar measures.

"While we recognise the financial pressures facing the country, these cuts are targeting essential frontline services, not just administrative overhead. When rehabilitation centres close, end-of-life care beds are reduced, and clinical posts are eliminated, it's patients who suffer. These are not solely corporate cost-cutting measures but harmful reductions that directly impact patient care and safety.

"We are particularly troubled by admissions from trust leaders that these cuts could "endanger patients" and have "adverse effects." No financial challenge justifies compromising patient safety.

"We urge the Government to work with patient groups and healthcare professionals to identify solutions that protect essential services while addressing financial constraints. Difficult choices must be made transparently with patient wellbeing, not just financial targets, at the centre of decision-making."
