What we have to say Latest news The Patients Association statement on the resident doctors strike ballot Published on 27 May 2025. Commenting on the resident doctors strike ballot which opened today (27th May 2025), Chief Executive of the Patients Association, Rachel Power, said: "The Patients Association is deeply concerned that we are once again facing the prospect of resident doctors strike action, with the BMA opening its ballot for industrial action today, 27th May and closing on the 7th July 2025. "More than 1.3 million appointments were cancelled or rescheduled due to previous strike action, but the number is likely to be much higher as fewer appointments are booked on planned strike days. Strike action causes significant distress, pain and worsening health for patients, while placing additional pressure on remaining NHS staff. "This comes at a time when public confidence in the NHS is already fragile. The latest British Social Attitudes survey reveals that just over 1 in 5 (21%) of British adults are satisfied with the way the NHS runs, the lowest level since records began. Further disruption risks damaging public confidence even more. "If the ballot succeeds, industrial action could run from July 2025 to January 2026, covering the critical winter period when the NHS faces its greatest pressures. "We respect resident doctors' right to take industrial action, and we urgently call on the BMA and Government to intensify meaningful negotiations before the ballot closes on 7 July. Both parties should consider independent arbitration if necessary to find a sustainable solution that protects patients. "Patients have already suffered too much disruption. The 2024 agreement showed that resolution is possible. We must not return to the damaging cycle that caused so much harm to patients and the wider healthcare system. Both sides must put patient welfare first and find a lasting solution." For media enquiries contact: [email protected]. Manage Cookie Preferences
